Architect Fumihiko Maki give first Design Museum in China

Shekou will be the home of the first major museum of design in China by 2016. Base on a contract that was sign in London by the Victoria and Albert Museum in Britain. With China Merchants Group.  The contract signing was also witness by British Prime Minister David Cameron and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

Shenzhen was a natural choice for a new design museum in China. Being home to 6,000 design companies employing more than 60,000 people.  It was also awarded the status of UNESCO City of Design in 2008.

As part of our redevelopment of the Shekou district of Shenzhen. We want to offer the local residents an internationally important museum. That would help promote the development of China’s creative industries and further progress design in China.” Said Mr Sun Chengming, Vice-President of CMG.

Maki’s design for the Shekou Museum features three severely cantilevered volumes atop a deconstructed plinth; a staircase at the corner of the building also leads to the green public space on the roof.

Model images released by Maki’s studio show a four storey building with three projecting volumes and a grand external staircase.

Flat roofs will host gardens and public terraces, while the entrance area of the concrete and steel structure will feature a triple-height glazed atrium.

This project will be the only cultural undertaking among the deals between the two countries during a meet. This will also be the first cooperation project between a British public organization and a Chinese enterprise.

The chief operating officer for Victoria and Albert Tim Reeve said, that the cooperation is a ambitious project of the company that will be carried on the tradition of the museum of working with China in sharing collectible pieces, expertise and knowledge.
