I have observed the problems caused due to rainwater causing immense damage & Breakdowns to the lifts. I would like to brief you with some of them and make our vertical travel smooth and safe.

Elevator Safety Precautions,

1)  Water Seepage in the Lift Machine Room:

Ø  Control Panel: Panel may get Short Circuit, giving rise to unnecessary expenses of renovation or replacing the panel board. In Microprocessor base panels, processor may get damage or E-prom may get erase in main motherboard.

Ø  Main Motor: Motor may get short-circuited or burned, giving rise to unnecessary expenses of rewinding the main motor & shutdown of lift for 3 to 4 days for rewinding the motor.

Ø  Break Liner: Liner may get damage causing slippage of brakes. Due to which lift will not stop at proper floor level. Due to which doors will not open properly or lift cage may go above the top floor level. Or below the ground floor level, which is unsafe from safety point.

2)  Water Seepage from the Lobby/Staircase into the floor doors:

Ø  Gate Locks: Locks contact may get defuse or rusty. Due to which lift can operate even after the doors are keep open, giving rise possibilities of causing accident.

Ø  Gang Switches: Switches may get damage. Due to which will not operate in certain direction or floors may not operate.

Ø  Push Button Box: Buttons may get short and will not operate giving rise to the possibilities of giving shock to the plate & also the indicators bulbs may get fused.

Ø  Junction Box & Connectors: Connectors may get short & lift may operate irregular & by-passing the safety circuits giving rise to the possibilities of causing accidents.

3)  Water Seepage & Getting Accumulated inside the lift Pit:

Ø  Trailing Cables: Cables may get immersed in the water & get damaged & lift may operate irregular &       by-passing the safety circuits giving rise to the possibilities of causing accidents.

Ø  Pit Pulley: Pulley may get rusted & stop rotating, So the over speed safety system clutches will come in action unnecessary, as a emergency brake will stop the movement of the lift in down direction.

Also check the lift installation Earthing, if not proper can cause leakage current shocks to the metallic parts such as doors, push button box plate & etc.

  • This is great information about elevator safety! You never know when rainwater might cause a problem for elevators, and I always think it’s better to be safe than sorry. The post mentioned that the motor may get short-circuited if there is water seepage in the lift machine room. I would imagine that’s pretty common when it comes to floods. Do you always have to wait 3 or 4 days before restarting the elevator, or is there something you can do to speed the process up?
