How to Take Care of your Furniture While you are Home

Social distancing and home lockdown have become the new norm, for now at least since the Corona outbreak has left the streets emptied and forced us in our houses. We don’t know how long the world has to suffer and till the time we are left stranded in our houses, no guests will be visiting us any sooner. However, the one thing we all can do while we are at our homes with no guests to be welcomed is ‘take care of our furniture so that when finally guests arrive after we are all done with this pandemic, they are left awe-gazing with the aesthetic beauty of our home interiors.

Here’s how you can take care of your furniture and make your home interiors even more elegant:

Ways to take care of your furniture:

1. Dusting is always important:

Shiny furniture makes the whole room brighter.

Keeping your home furniture clean and dust-free is always the first thing that everyone should be doing regularly. Start with dusting your furniture with bendable dusters that easily reach every nook and corner of the furniture. Be it wooden, leather, iron, or class furniture, dusting is important for all.

2. Vacuuming:

While dusting takes care of the dust settled on your furniture, vacuuming makes sure that your furniture never looks old by sucking out the leftover dust particles and other stuff that may break down the fibre of your furniture. However, it isn’t advisable to regularly vacuum your furniture but doing that weekly will make sure that your furniture lasts longer.

3. Rotation is the key-Afterall change is good:

While every member of the family has his own fixed spot since we humans are creatures of habit, it may leave the furniture to lose its shape due to one area being used more than the other.

Areas of the furniture. Therefore, it is advisable to keep rotating your position(change is good too).

4. Avoid direct exposure to sunlight:

Both wooden and leather furniture shouldn’t be in direct contact with the incoming sunlight.

Sunlight can cause the wooden furniture to cause dark spots on the exposed surface while leather furniture is prone to dry-rotting which can eventually cause the leather surface to break down and crumble. Avoid direct exposure and use protective covers(tablecloth, sofa covers) on your furniture. Moreover, you can also use film coating on windows to avoid direct exposure to furniture.

5. Oiling and polishing:

The best way to take care of your furniture is to maintain its shine and luster. For wooden furniture, oiling and waxing should be done frequently as it gives the furniture an extra gloss.

For leather furniture, apply leather cream on the furniture surface to remoisturize the surface.

6. Be mindful of temperature:

Placing hot and cold objects like tea, cold drinks, etc should be avoided from the furniture surface as it can leave spots that are hard to get rid of and can make the furniture look ugly. Instead, use teapots and/or other utensils to place such objects.

7. Treat wear and tear:

Since furniture plays a vital part in uplifting your home ambience, keeping them in good shape is very important. Many times, wear and tear can give an ugly look to the furniture as well as your home interior. To keep your furniture free from wear and tear here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Tighten up your furniture screws frequently
  • Use specific cleaners like for wood use mild dish soap and warm water while for leather use specific stain removers
  • Use leather cream and varnish to get rid of scratches

8. Cleaning upholstery:

The holster is the soft, padded covering that is fixed to furniture such as armchairs and sofas. It is also the most vital part of every piece of furniture that has it. To keep the holster clean use slipcovers that will keep the upholstery clean and also avoid spill stains. When cleaning the upholstery use a soft brush attached with the vacuum cleaner. Also, make sure that such furniture is kept away from excessive humidity and dryness.

9. Cleaning and maintaining iron furniture:

Wrought iron is one of the most widely used metals for both outdoor furniture as well as indoor furniture like shelves, fixtures, railings, etc. However, they are prone to dust and dirt more readily than other pieces of furniture and therefore need extra care. Here’s how you can take care of your iron furniture:

  • Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attached to get rid of dust.
  • Wash with a mixture of mild warm water and dish soap.
  • Rinse with water.
  • Apply touch-up paint once or twice a month.

10. Cleaning and maintaining glass furniture:

Using glass and mirrored furniture has been long prevalent to style home interiors as they give an extra touch of gloss to the existing interiors. Even though these beautiful pieces of furniture do make your home interior even more glamorous, they also need proper care. Here’s what you need to do to keep them fresh and lively for a longer period of time:

  • Use special glass cleaners to wipe and clean them instead of using a plain hard water
  • Use Chamois or Microfiber Cloth to clean as they don’t leave behind fibers and lint and make the glass surface even more shinier.

Summing Up:

While we are at our homes and enjoying family time, we all can take some time out to keep our furniture shiny so that they remain cozy and comfortable when we all sit down for a family sit down. Follow the above tips and enjoy some quality family time with nice and clean furniture to set the perfect aura.
